Industry 4.0 vs Industry 5.0

Industry 4.0 — efficiency
Cyber-physical systems that optimise and automate. The metric is throughput: faster, cheaper, bigger. Humans adapt to the machine.
Industry 5.0 — people
Human-centric (the worker’s wellbeing is a design goal), sustainable (within planetary limits), and resilient (able to absorb shocks). The machine adapts to the human.

You can walk into it: advanced-manufacturing hubs like the Factory of the Future at Flinders University (Tonsley, Adelaide), where the whole point is people and machines working together.

Framework hole — is 5.0 a revolution or a correction?
Industry 5.0 is a policy label (European Commission, 2021), not a new technology. Critics argue it is less a fifth revolution than a values correction on the fourth — a reminder that producing more was never the point. Useful either way, but do not mistake the naming for new machinery.
